Transforming Memories into Rituals: Honoring Lost Loved Ones

When we lose someone we love, the pain can feel overwhelming. However, as we move through the grieving process, many find solace in keeping the memory of their loved ones alive. There are numerous ways to do this, each offering a unique form of comfort and connection. Today, let’s delve into two impactful ways: building memorials and establishing rituals, traditions, or celebrations.

Physical Memorials: Crafting a Tangible Connection

Building a physical memorial can be a therapeutic way to honor the memory of a lost loved one. This can range from a small corner in your home filled with cherished belongings to more elaborate creations like community murals or even dedicated spaces like a memorial garden. By focusing on positive aspects, you are able to celebrate their life, allowing their presence to continue influencing the world in a meaningful way.

           Practice Offering: Memorial Garden

Creating a memorial garden in your yard or even a community space can be an enduring way to remember your loved one. Choose plants, flowers, or other elements that resonate with their personality or shared memories. Over time, the garden will grow, just like your evolving connection with your lost loved one.

Traditions, Rituals, and Celebrations: An Emotional Keepsake

Equally impactful are rituals or traditions that encapsulate the spirit or essence of the person lost. Whether it’s a yearly gathering of friends and family to celebrate their life, or a simpler, more private ritual like lighting a candle on significant dates, such traditions can bring comfort and help manage grief.

           Practice Offering: Candlelight Vigil

On the anniversary of your loved one’s passing, consider having a candlelight vigil. This simple yet profound act can serve as a ritualistic space for your grief and other challenging emotions to surface and flow.

The Dual Nature of Memory

While these actions focus on positive memories, it’s crucial to acknowledge that grief may still be present. Rituals and physical memorials can sometimes trigger sadness or other challenging emotions. However, this is a natural part of the process. Rituals offer not only a remembrance but also a container for these emotions. They create a space where you can engage with your feelings, allowing them to move through you.

Remember, we each have the agency to choose how we want to honor our lost loved ones. It’s these choices that help us move through grief, transforming it into an enduring connection. Your grief, your memories, and your love are all parts of a greater whole, helping you navigate the complexities of loss and remembrance.

           The Importance of Self-Love

Before I get into this month’s theme—”The Process of Dying: Biological, Psychological, and Sociocultural Aspects”—I want to take a moment to discuss the importance of self-love. I was recently inspired by a conversation about what we wish most for our children. For me, it’s the hope that they learn to love themselves unconditionally. After all, every positive change we seek in the world and in our lives begins with this foundational act of self-love. So, before exploring the complexities of dying, let’s consider today how to live more fully through loving ourselves.

           The Power of Self-Love

A ‘happy’ life—though the term is imperfect—springs from the well of self-love. To fully love others and make meaningful contributions to the world, we must first establish a strong foundation of self-love.

           Judgement Free Zone

The other side of this coin is the absence of self-judgment. Criticizing ourselves, especially when we err, is counterproductive. Instead, label your actions as either helpful or unhelpful, skillful or unskillful. Apologize and make amends if necessary, learn from the experience, and move on. Being mindful in this way prepares us for making better choices in similar future situations.

           Ahimsa: A Cornerstone of Self-Love

In yoga philosophy, the term ‘Ahimsa’ means ‘non-violence.’ It’s one of the yamas, or ethical guidelines, and extends to not just physical non-violence, but also emotional and psychological non-violence toward oneself. At the yoga studio where I teach, I’m building my classes around the concept of ahimsa this month, especially the aspect of non-violence towards oneself.

           Practice Offering: Cultivating Self-Love

To help you get started on your self-love journey, here’s a simple mindfulness practice:

Find a quiet space and sit comfortably.

Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.

Bring to mind a quality you admire in yourself.

Repeat the phrase, “I love and appreciate myself for [quality]” three times.

Take a few more deep breaths and open your eyes.
Make this a daily practice, and you’ll likely start feeling a deeper sense of love and appreciation for yourself.

Coming up, we’ll be delving into various facets of the dying process, divided into four weekly themes:

Week 1: Biological Aspects of Dying

Week 2: Psychological Aspects of Dying

Week 3: Sociocultural Aspects of Dying

Week 4: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Dying

As we explore these topics, remember that a solid foundation of self-love is crucial for facing the complexities of life, including mortality. Stay tuned for detailed discussions in the coming weeks.

Death, a subject often encased in societal taboos, carries an undercurrent of fear and anxiety for many. However, a detailed understanding of the body’s changes during the dying process can offer solace and a grounding reality. Today, we’ll explore the physiological mechanisms at play, breaking it down system by system. The aim is not to instill fear but to equip you with the knowledge that might make this inevitable experience slightly less daunting.

           The Respiratory System: Breaths Wane

As an individual approaches the end of life, changes in breathing patterns become increasingly noticeable. Rapid breathing may alternate with very slow, shallow breaths. This is often due to the body’s waning need for oxygen as its metabolic processes slow down.

           Practice Offering:

Elevating the head and applying a humidifier can offer comfort to the dying person. Deep, guided breathing exercises might also soothe agitation.

Kübler-Ross and the 5 Stages of Grief

This week, we’ll be getting into some of the psychological aspects of death and dying. Navigating the psychological maze of dying can often seem like a complex, even enigmatic, task. While everyone’s emotional journey is unique, the Five Stages of Grief, introduced by Swiss-American psychiatrist Elizabeth Kübler-Ross, provide a blueprint that helps many understand the psychological complexities tied to dying, grief, and loss.

Elizabeth Kübler-Ross was born in Switzerland in 1926 and later immigrated to the United States. She began her groundbreaking work in the late 1960s, at a time when the subject of death was mostly taboo in medical and academic circles. Her seminal book, “On Death and Dying,” published in 1969, opened a dialogue about the end-of-life experience and changed the way the medical community, and society at large, approached dying and bereavement. She was working in a period of societal flux, amid the civil rights movement, and women’s liberation, but her work managed to cut through the noise, earning her numerous awards and honorary degrees.

           The Five Stages of Grief

           1. Denial

In this stage, individuals often have difficulty grasping the reality of the situation. They may feel numb and question whether what’s happening is real.

           2. Anger

Anger can manifest in different ways: towards oneself, loved ones, medical staff, or even the person who has passed away. It’s an emotional expression of the frustration tied to the loss.

           3. Bargaining

Individuals may engage in a mental negotiation, often with a higher power, in an attempt to reverse or lessen the loss. This stage is rife with “what if” and “if only” statements.

           4. Depression

Unlike clinical depression, this is a situational depression that stems from the grief process. Individuals may feel intense sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of motivation.

           5. Acceptance

This is not a stage of joy, but rather one of acknowledgment and coming to terms with the reality of the loss.

           Practice Offering:

Consider engaging in reflective journaling. Write down your feelings as you go through each stage. You don’t have to share this journal; it’s a safe space for your emotions. Revisit it at different intervals to gauge your progress through the grief stages.

Confronting Fear and Anxiety at the End of Life

One of the most potent fears humans grapple with is the fear of death. In my work as an end-of-life doula and as a yoga teacher, I’ve found that addressing this fear is vital for people who are nearing the end of life or have had experiences that bring them face-to-face with their mortality.

This juncture is where the philosophies of yoga and Vedanta offer valuable insights. Vedanta, a school of thought rooted in ancient Indian wisdom, provides an enlightening perspective on the nature of existence through a prayer known as “Asato Ma Sadgamaya.” This prayer serves as an invocation to lead us from untruth to truth, from darkness to light, and from mortality to immortality. The mantra encapsulates the journey from ignorance to knowledge and from the limitations and fears bound to our physical existence to a state of eternal, undying peace.

           Why Address Fear Now?

The reason to face this existential dread sooner rather than later is simple: The more we understand our true, eternal nature, the less we fear the inevitable transition that we all must undergo.

           Practices for Understanding the Self

In my yoga classes and one-on-one sessions, I often integrate specific yogic practices that help answer the perennial question, “Who am I?” Vedantic wisdom, especially the “Asato Ma Sadgamaya” prayer, often serves as the philosophical underpinning of these practices. By guiding us away from the transience of bodily existence and towards the immortal Self, these practices help mitigate fear and anxiety, not just at the end of life but throughout it.

           Experience Joy Through Discovery

The intersection of yoga and my end-of-life doula work lies precisely in helping you explore these questions. The goal is not merely to find an intellectual answer but to experience the profound joy that comes from this level of self-discovery. When you can transcend your ego and identify with the eternal, immortal essence of who you are, existential fears, including the fear of death, begin to diminish.

           The Ego and The Self

One of the main obstacles in attaining a sense of peace is our identification with the ego—the constructed self filled with roles, expectations, and fears. By detaching from the ego, even momentarily, we make room for a deeper understanding of our true Self. Yoga offers various ways to make this shift, from physical postures to breathing techniques, to deep meditation.

The objective is not to arrive at an answer but to deepen the questioning, peeling away the layers of identity until a sense of inner peace is attained.

Death is a universal experience, but the ways in which we deal with it can vary widely from culture to culture. This blog aims to shed light on some unique perspectives on death from different cultures around the world.

The Navajo Nation has a rich and complex relationship with death, rooted in ancient legends and customs. According to Navajo legend, death came into existence due to an animal hide experiment where a coyote sank the hide into the water. The coyote reasoned that without death, there would be overpopulation and lack of resources. When a Navajo passes away, the burial process is meticulous, aiming to ensure the deceased doesn’t return to the world of the living. Only a select few come into contact with the dead body, and family members often avoid looking at it to ensure the smooth transition of the spirit to the underworld.

In Hinduism, the concept of death is intricately connected to the belief in the soul, or “ātman,” and its journey through cycles of birth and rebirth. The ultimate goal for Hindus is to achieve ‘Moksha,’ or liberation from this cycle. Death practices can be complex, involving a range of rituals like cremation and ceremonies called “śrāddha,” which are designed to assist the soul in its journey after death. Depending on one’s deeds in life, the soul undergoes judgment by Yama, the god of death, and is then assigned to either heaven or hell for a limited period before the cycle of reincarnation begins anew.

Buddhism views death not as the end but as a critical juncture in the cycle of life and rebirth known as Samsara. This makes it a moment of immense potential for enlightenment. Various practices in different Buddhist traditions aim to generate compassion and insight during the dying process. Tibetan Buddhists, for example, have the unique “Sky Burial” ritual where the deceased’s body is left for vultures as a symbol of life’s impermanence and a way to give back to the Earth. In Japan, Zen Buddhists often turn to meditation during the dying process, using it as a tool for confronting and accepting the reality of death.

Dying in the West: The American Perspective

In contrast to the more spiritually enriched views from other cultures, the perspective on death in the United States can often be termed as avoidant. The topic remains a cultural taboo, usually discussed in hushed tones, if at all. This silence around the subject can be emotionally damaging both for those who are dying and for their loved ones. Medical facilities, rather than homes or community spaces, become the sterile environments where life meets its end, often devoid of the rituals or spiritual practices that can bring comfort and meaning to this final transition.

           The Price of Avoidance

This cultural avoidance has real, tangible consequences. It complicates grieving and can extend the process of mourning unnecessarily. Moreover, it leads to unpreparedness, affecting crucial end-of-life decisions and causing added stress during an already difficult time.

Conclusion: A Thought from Ram Dass

As spiritual teacher Ram Dass wisely stated, “We’re all just walking each other home.” Understanding death through the lens of different cultures—from the spiritual practices of the Navajo Nation to the cycles of birth and rebirth in Hinduism and Buddhism—enriches our approach to this universal human experience. The importance of openly discussing death cannot be overstated, as it directly impacts the emotional well-being of those departing and those left behind.
